Battery Safety

Battery and charging safety

Power it safely.

Simple habits make a real difference. Use the right charger, keep the charging area clear, stop at warning signs and recycle every battery responsibly.

The quick version

Four rules to remember.

01 · Match

Use the correct charger

Use the supplied charger or a manufacturer-approved replacement for the exact product.

02 · Clear

Charge in a safe place

Choose a dry, ventilated area and a hard, non-flammable surface away from exits and soft furnishings.

03 · Stop

Act on warning signs

Swelling, excessive heat, leaks, unusual smells, noises or smoke mean stop immediately.

04 · Recycle

Never put batteries in a bin

Keep batteries and battery-powered products out of household rubbish, recycling and hard waste.

Emergency warning

Smoking or on fire? Get out and call 000.

  • Evacuate immediately and close doors behind you if it is safe.
  • Call Triple Zero (000) from a safe location.
  • Do not inhale smoke or fumes and do not re-enter the building.
  • Lithium-ion batteries can reignite after visible flames stop.

Safe charging

Give charging your attention.

  • Read and follow the product manual.
  • Let the battery cool after use before recharging.
  • Charge on concrete, ceramic, steel or another hard, non-flammable surface.
  • Keep it away from beds, sofas, carpet, paper, curtains and other flammable materials.
  • Do not charge in a bedroom, near an exit, while asleep or while away from home.
  • Disconnect the product when it is fully charged.
  • Never use a damaged charger, cable or connector.
  • Do not use an unrelated charger simply because the plug fits.
  • Keep a working smoke alarm near regular charging areas.

Safe storage

Cool, dry and protected.

  • Store products and batteries away from direct sun, moisture and heat.
  • Do not leave them in a parked vehicle or hot enclosed shed.
  • Keep them away from children and pets.
  • Keep removable batteries away from keys, coins and other metal objects.
  • Protect batteries from impact, crushing and water.
  • Do not open, puncture, modify or attempt to repair a battery.
  • Use the protective contact cover supplied with a Mirel Core Battery when it is stored without a module.
  • Check the product manual for model-specific storage instructions.

Stop immediately

Know the warning signs.

Swelling
Bulging or blistering
Damage
Cracks, dents, punctures or crushing
Leaks
Fluid, residue or corrosion
Exposure
Water, fire or severe impact
Heat or smell
Unusual heat, odour or discolouration
Noise or smoke
Hissing, popping, crackling, fumes or smoke

Never touch a swollen or ruptured battery with bare hands. Stop using and charging the product, keep people away and contact Mirel for guidance if it can be done safely.

Recycle responsibly

Keep batteries out of every household bin.

Batteries can start fires in bins, trucks and recycling facilities. Use the right drop-off option for the battery’s condition.

Undamaged removable battery

Cover exposed terminals or connectors with clear, non-conductive tape without hiding the label. Take it to a suitable battery recycling point.

Battery built into a product

Do not dismantle it. Take the complete product to a facility that accepts embedded batteries or e-waste.

Damaged, swollen or hot battery

Do not place it in a public collection bin and do not post it. Contact your council, Community Recycling Centre or hazardous-waste service for instructions.

Flying with batteries

Power banks belong in carry-on.

Spare batteries and power banks must stay in carry-on baggage with terminals protected from short circuits. Devices with installed batteries must be switched off and protected from damage or accidental activation.

Airline approval is required for 100-160 Wh batteries. Batteries over 160 Wh are generally prohibited in passenger baggage, apart from limited exceptions. Always check your airline before travel.
